The Two Ketchups BETTER Than Heinz

Their Names Are So Similar I Keep Getting Them Mixed Up

“At my restaurants, we take pride in making a lot of our products from scratch. However, I gave up on making ketchup,” said 2021 Food & Wine Best New Chef Fermín Nuñez. “Heinz figured out a long time ago how to make a better product than whatever my fancy, chef-y, house-made ketchup could ever try to be.”

I agree with the Chef that it’s virtually impossible to make a better-tasting ketchup than Heinz.

And, yes, I’ve tried all the “artisanal” ones I could find (and no, I don’t love Sir Kensington’s. I haven’t really loved any of their products).

However, there are TWO I think are actually MORE DELICIOUS and, thus, BETTER THAN HEINZ.  The first is shown above. This “ALL GOLD” “Tomato SAUCE” from South Africa is so good I have actually eaten straight from the bottle. It has a rich tomatoey flavor that is a bit closer to a sweet tomato PASTE than the vinegary, less-thick Heinz. Here’s a link to this ketchup on Amazon. It’s closest American equivalent is:

A family-owned brand from the Midwest, RED GOLD makes a variety of tomato products. Their ketchup is magnificent. Again, it’s a richer, more tomato-pasty, variety than Heinz. They also make a sriracha version and a jalapeño version which has been a Steamie Award-ee. Apparently Disney World switched from Heinz to Red Gold in 2021 (although I don’t know if they have since switched back).

Here’s a link to buy a three-pack on Amazon.

ALL THIS SAID: I would still go with Heinz if I was planning to use/eat a LOT of ketchup. Both All Gold and Red Gold are RICH and deeply flavorful and will start to lose their appeal after maybe 1/4 cup. Heinz doesn’t suffer from this syndrome; one can, and often does, eat a lot more in one sitting.
