Visiting Warren Buffett's Favorite Steakhouse

There Are SO Many Money Puns I Made Here But I Deleted Them You're Welcome

My Culinary Curiosity Dinner took place at the awesome Nite Owl in Omaha on Tuesday night, and while in town, I took the opportunity to visit a local landmark: Gorat’s, the preferred steakhouse of Omaha’s most famous resident, billionaire Warren Buffett.

I went for lunch and there was only one other table of people there! And by incredible coincidence, one of the diners at that table was ALSO from Portland.

There is a lot of Warren Buffet & Berkshire Hathaway memorabilia on the walls. It appears they also have their annual stockholders meeting there because they had leftover t-shirts they were selling. Sadly, they were out of my size.

Please note: I don’t usually order broccoli with my steak. I usually order some luscious filling potatoes — preferably au gratin — like a normal person. However the show was that night and I didn’t want to get all full of carbs and fall asleep.

Depicted above is my lunch: medium-rare Ribeye. It was truly excellent. Was it the best steak I ever had? No. It was the third best steak I ever had, after Doe’s Eat Place in Greenville, Mississippi, in 1999 and The Golden Steer in Las Vegas in 2024.

Later, I was told by Omaha locals that it was like the 30th best steakhouse in town so I obviously have more steak-tasting to do.

The Culinary Curiosity Dinner that night was a huge success, with a secret menu of:

  • Chicago Handshake” with Housemade Beer Nuts

  • Hawaii Spam Musubi

  • Rhode Island Clam Chowder

  • Mini Taylor Ham/Pork Roll Sandwich

  • Midwest Pickled Green Tomatoes

  • Mississippi Mud Roast

  • Key Lime Pie

Noah, Chef Gabe, and the Nite Owl crew pulled it off flawlessly for a completed packed full house and everybody had a blast!

Nite Owl, Omaha.

Tickets are NOW ON SALE for all three July Culinary Curiosity Dinners at the links below, so if you live in these cities, COME! If you don’t, tell your friend to COME!

This Week’s All-Timer

This is a recurring feature of this newsletter in which I highlight one of my all-time favorite foods or food products which I haven’t talked or posted about in a while.

This week it’s Englewood United Methodist Church Peanuts. These are the best peanuts I’ve ever eaten, and I’ve had a lot. I didn’t realize it but apparently North Carolina Church Peanuts are a thing, and there are several varieties in circulation.

These are lightly salted, very crunchy, and so flavorful. Unfortunately, they are also very hard to find and many places online seem to be out of stock. I got a jar at Portland’s fantastic Wellspent Market a few years back but haven’t seen them since.

For a less-hard-to-find peanut that’s easily 95% as good as these, may I recommend Feridie’s? I’ve tried several brands of highly-acclaimed Virginia peanuts and Feridie’s are consistently the best. They are available on Amazon and in some grocery stores and come in a nice variety of styles and flavors including AWESOME chocolate coated ones.

Excellent for all sorts of snacking!

How about you forward this newsletter to someone else who might enjoy it? That’d be appreciated.
